What Is a Fire Risk Assessment?
A fire risk assessment is a systematic review to identify fire hazards in a workplace, determine risk levels, and plan necessary measures.
Under OHS Law No. 6331, all employers are required to conduct this.

5-Step Methodology
1. Identify Hazards
Ignition Sources:
- Electrical faults, open flames, hot surfaces
- Smoking, chemical reactions
Combustible Materials:
- Paper, wood, flammable liquids/gases
- Plastic, foam, textiles
2. People at Risk
- Employees (including night shift)
- Visitors, people with disabilities
- Contractor personnel
3. Evaluate Risks
| Level | Probability | Severity | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | Rare | Mild | Monitor |
| Medium | Likely | Moderate | Take measures |
| High | Probable | Serious | Urgent action |
| Very High | Certain | Severe | Stop immediately |

4. Record and Implement
Document hazards, assign responsibility, create timeline, plan budget.
5. Review
- Update at least once a year
- Revise after incidents/changes
Common Mistakes
1Doing it once and forgetting
2Desk-only assessment
3Not gathering employee input
4Not following up on measures
5Insufficient documentation
